I've heard it called "The Bowtie", "The Butterfly", "The Criss Cross", and "The Magic X". Cross multiplication has been given many names by teachers trying to get students to understand how to compare fractions. But does cross multiplication really help students to UNDERSTAND fraction comparisons? Does this method help a student to understand which fraction is larger or smaller? Or does cross multiplication give student an avenue for choosing a correct answer in standardized test situations? Is cross multiplication a trick or a strategy?
